RV Electronics Essentials: Power, Charging and Connectivity

RV electronics fall into two systems: the 12-volt house battery that runs lights, the water pump, and 12-volt outlets, and the 120-volt shore power or generator that runs the air conditioner, microwave, and standard outlets. Knowing the difference decides what you can run off-grid and what needs a hookup. The gear below keeps phones, laptops, and small devices charged no matter where you camp.

Understand the Two Power Systems
- 12-volt (house battery): lights, water pump, furnace fan, 12-volt and USB outlets. Recharges from driving, solar, or shore power.
- 120-volt (shore/generator): air conditioner, microwave, standard plugs. Unavailable off-grid without a generator or inverter.
The roof A/C will drain a battery in minutes — it needs shore power or a generator. The furnace and fridge run on propane with a 12-volt control draw.
Charging Gear to Bring
- 12-volt USB chargers: charge phones from the house battery, not an inverter.
- Power bank (20,000+ mAh): charge laptops and phones off-grid.
- Inverter (if not built in): turns 12-volt into 120-volt for small devices only — not the A/C.
- Vehicle charger: keep the tow or toad topped up.
- Extra cables and a multi-port adapter.
Connectivity
- Cell coverage is unreliable in parks and deserts. Plan for it:
- Download offline maps before you leave service.
- A phone hotspot works where signal exists; a dedicated hotspot or booster helps at the edge.
- Tell someone your route and expected return if going off-grid.
Power Management Off-Grid
- Switch to LED bulbs to stretch the battery.
- Skip the A/C unless you have a generator.
- Charge devices while driving, when the alternator recharges the house battery.
- Consider the rig’s solar if equipped; a panel slows drain on sunny days.
