How much gas will my RV trip cost?
Multiply your trip miles by your RV average MPG to get gallons used, then multiply by your local fuel price per gallon. For example, 800 miles in a Class C at 12 MPG is about 67 gallons, which at $3.85/gallon costs around $258. The calculator above does this instantly and adjusts for highway or mountain driving.
What is the average MPG for an RV?
Class A motorhomes average 6 to 10 MPG, Class C motorhomes 10 to 14 MPG, Class B camper vans 16 to 20 MPG, and travel trailers 10 to 15 MPG depending on the tow vehicle. Your real-world number depends on load, speed, and terrain.
How does terrain affect RV fuel economy?
Mountain driving can cut fuel economy by 20 to 35 percent because of constant climbing and engine braking. Highway cruising at 60 to 65 MPH is the most efficient speed for most RVs. Driving over 70 MPH drops MPG by about 1 to 2 MPG on most rigs.
Should I use gas or diesel pricing in the calculator?
Use the price that matches your RV. Class A and larger Class C rigs often run on diesel, which costs more per gallon but delivers more energy. Class B camper vans and smaller trailers usually run on regular gas. Your rental company will tell you which fuel the rig uses.
