RV vs hotel: the go / no-go that the average number hides
The single "RV is cheaper" headline is wrong for some trips and right for others. The financial go/no-go flips on two variables:
- Trip length. Hotel cost scales linearly with nights; RV rental is a fixed daily cost plus campground fees. Past about 5-6 nights the RV usually pulls ahead for a group.
- Group size. One hotel room caps at 2-4 people. A family of four pays for 2 rooms; one RV holds them all. The bigger the group, the more RV wins per person.
Go RV when: 5+ nights, 3+ travelers, and you will cook most meals.
Go hotel when: 1-3 nights, 1-2 travelers, or big-city stops where campgrounds are scarce or pricey.
State campground costs (open dataset)
Campground fees are the swing factor. We publish a CC BY 4.0 dataset of estimated 2026 nightly RV campground fees by state — coastal and Northeast states run ~$58/night, most others ~$42-48. Boondocking on public land is free with an Interagency Pass, which can flip the whole comparison.
