Motorhomes in Maine
A Class A, B, or C motorhome is titled and registered as a motor vehicle. That means it is subject to the same liability insurance minimums your state sets for any car or truck -- there is no separate "RV" liability law. The minimums below are each state's auto limits, and they are the floor: most RV owners buy well above them because a motorhome causes far more damage than a sedan in a collision.
Towables in Maine
Travel trailers, fifth wheels and pop-up campers are not motor vehicles, so no state requires them to carry their own liability insurance. While you are towing, the liability coverage on your truck or SUV extends to the trailer. Off the ball -- parked at a campsite -- a trailer needs its own comprehensive and collision coverage (lenders require it, and many campgrounds do too), but that is physical-damage, not liability. The state minimums below do not apply to a towable on its own.
Full-timers in Maine
Full-time RVers -- those who live in the rig year-round -- generally need a specialty "full-timer's" policy rather than a standard auto or travel policy. It blends motorhome liability with homeowners-style coverages (personal liability at the campsite, contents, storage sheds). A standard auto minimum will not cover a full-timer's liability when the rig is parked and being lived in.
