Comparing an electric camper van to a gas motorhome is not as simple as "electric is cheaper." The answer depends on where you charge, because the price of electricity varies more than the price of gas. At home overnight rates, electricity is a bargain. Is an electric RV cheaper to run than a gas RV?
It depends mainly on where you charge. At home electricity rates ($0.12/kWh), an EV camper costs about half as much per mile as a gas RV at current fuel prices ($4.08/gal). But if you rely entirely on public DC fast chargers ($0.35-0.50/kWh), the cost advantage largely disappears. The calculator above lets you plug in your real rates to see the actual comparison.
How much does it cost to charge an electric RV on a trip?
For a 500-mile trip: at home electricity rates (~$0.12/kWh), roughly $18-25 total for a typical Class B electric camper. At public fast charger rates (~$0.40/kWh), roughly $50-65. Compare that to a gas Class C motorhome burning about 40 gallons at $4.08/gal = ~$163. Even fast charging is cheaper, but the convenience and time tradeoff matters.
Are electric RVs cheaper to maintain than gas RVs?
The electric drivetrain has far fewer moving parts: no oil changes, no transmission fluid, no spark plugs, no belts. Brake pads last longer due to regenerative braking. However, the RV living systems (water, propane, appliances) are identical between electric and gas RVs, so those maintenance costs are the same. The battery is the biggest wildcard — it degrades slowly but replacement costs are substantial if needed outside of warranty.
Do electric RVs cost more to buy or rent?
Currently yes. Electric RVs like the Winnebago eRV2 cost more upfront than comparable gas models. Rental prices are also higher when available, though the supply is so limited that pricing is not yet standardized. The calculator focuses on operating costs per trip, not purchase/rental price.
